![]() Our lives reflect on what is going on in the world at a certain time and place. The way of life meaning comes from common sense. The elites then forced people to work on a certain task and made sure the people with no power could not do anything they pleased. These were practices that emerged from groups of people in higher power (leaders of government, for example) and they forced their demands on people with no power. They couldn’t rely on industry for their economy because all the industry was in the North and all the goods were transported to the South when production was completed.Ī question that comes up is where do these contemporary meanings come from? For the slavery and oppression meanings, they have been practiced for many thousands of years. ![]() Without agriculture, there is no way that the economy of the South could grow during this time. This was a huge factor for the growth of the economy of the South. Where I am going with this meaning is that everyday life in the South was mainly agricultural based well into the 1800s. The meaning that I am referring to is a way of life. ![]() Then it would follow that oppression is a practice where slavery can be a possible consequence of that practice.Īlthough these two contemporary meanings seem common knowledge to everyone, there is also a third meaning that many people might not think about. The reason I say this is because slavery to me seems to be a possible consequence of a certain practice. When a contemporary meaning of slavery is identified with a cultural artifact, then the contemporary meaning of oppression should also be included with that artifact. It is common sense in today’s era that slavery and human trafficking is immoral.Ī second contemporary meaning that is associated with the Confederate flag is oppression. One contemporary meaning this flag has today is slavery. Even though this flag only lasted for a few years in the 1860s, it still has a lot of contemporary meanings today. For this post I decided to pick the Confederate flag as the topic for this post. A cultural artifact is an image, a piece of architecture, or art that has some encoded contemporary meaning. This blog post is about a cultural artifact.
